Obituary

Harold Benny McCormick of Marble Hill, Mo., died at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, Mo., on February 8, 2022, at the age of 91.  Born in Chaffee, Mo., on June 14, 1930, he was the son of Benjamin Waite and Virgie Mae Lee McCormick.

On January 24, 1951, he entered the U.S. Navy following working as a service station attendant.  He served during the Korean War Conflict on the USS Elkhorn.  On January 14, 1955, he separated from military duty.  On September 21, 1957, he married the love of his life, Thelma Jean Morrill, in St. Louis, Mo.  Their companionship was constant.  When Thelma predeceased him on December 30, 2020, he missed her very much.

To their union six children were born:  David (Lori) McCormick of Glen Allen, Mo., Mark McCormick, Brad McCormick, both of Marble Hill, Gaylene (Eddie) Benfield of Glen Allen, Cheryl (Dan) Schlief, and Shannon McCormick, both of Marble Hill.

Harold worked in sales during his working years.  One job was selling correspondence courses, which allowed him to attain college credits for both an associates degree and a bachelors degree.  Locally he is remembered for his work as McCormick Tires.  He loved to read, especially Louis L’Amour books and the Bible.  While he was a collector and dabbler into many interests, the favorite collections were coins, guns and his family.

Besides his children Harold is survived by two brothers, Gerald McCormick of Marble Hill and Cecil McCormick of Plano, Texas; by a sister, Donna McCormick of West Plains, Mo; by 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.  HE was preceded in death by a grandson, Cole Benfield; two brothers: Ron “Mac” and Junior; and three sisters:  Patty, Rita, and Christine.
