Jesse Franklin Seiler gave a full day’s work at bricklaying on Sept. 18, 2019. Ninety plus degree weather quickened laying down his trowel for the day. And as he walked to his vehicle, earthly life ended before he even popped a top.
Born on Dec 2, 1957, he came into the world at a healthy 11 lbs and 2 oz. His saintly mother stated she was never the same after his birth. He was the fourth child and second son of Orval Joseph and Helen Marie Holcomb Seiler. A mover even at one year of age, his parents couldn’t keep up with him after the fifth baby was born. He stayed with Grandpa and Grandma Seiler for several months and became a favored boy. He was baptized at St. John Catholic Church in Leopold, Missouri. It would remain his home church his entire life.
He attended school for 12 years at Leopold Schools. Test scores showed he was highly intelligent. However, academic ambition was not proof. He read any book that looked interesting, memorized lines verbatim from cartoons, and argued politics with the best. And he bested most, unless he had filled his Styrofoam cup too many times. He possessed a wicked, dry sense of humor, and had many one-liners to express his opinion.
He married Karen Mouser in 1978. In 1980 the family moved to Texas seeking bricklaying work in hard economic times. He lived out of the back of his pickup truck until he saved enough money for an apartment for Karen and her daughter, Dawn. He and Karen parted company in 1988.
Jesse would give help to most anyone in bad straits. He invited Phyllis Lynn to shelter with him with her three children and one on the way. They worked at raising Phyllis’s four children and one son together for over 31 years. As the family grew Jesse bought a bigger house and soon grandchildren shared it with them. Jesse was a gifted mason, a reliable worker, and never sat around unless the weather was bad. He was often in Missouri working as well as Texas.
Jesse leaves to mourn his passing a son, James Seiler; his life-companion, Phyllis Lynn; his mother, Helen Marie Seiler; his God-mother, Marie Seiler; his four step-children: Melody Armstrong, Amy Lynn, Codie Ledlow and Ashley Haws; two brothers: John Seiler and Joe Seiler; two sisters: Annabel Engelen and Marian Hutchings; a passle of grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; many nephews and nieces and loyal, loving friends.
